\u201cWhat is an open syllable<\/a>?\u201d is an important question we\u2019ve talked about before in this blog. It is\u00a0a syllable in which there are no consonants after a single vowel, resulting in the vowel making a long vowel sound.\u00a0<\/strong>Eleven of the top hundred most commonly used words in English are are single-syllable, open-syllable words.(1)\u00a0 Examples of open syllable words from this popular set include I, he, me, she, no, so, my <\/em>and by<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n In this post, I\u2019d like to give you some fun\u00a0examples of open syllable words<\/strong> that are multi-syllable and used in pop songs\u00a0<\/strong>new and old. I\u2019ve linked to YouTube videos of all the songs because you know you\u2019ll want to listen!<\/p>\n OK, let\u2019s get this one on the table right away.\u00a0 Not only is The Bieb a Canadian like our own app dev Greg McDonald<\/a>\u00a0but he gave us one of the best pop songs starring an open syllable word ever made on his 2010 debut album My World 2.0.\u00a0 Of course, we\u2019re talking about \u201cBaby\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cBaby\u201d in \u201cBaby\u201d<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n And I was like baby<\/strong>, baby<\/strong>, baby<\/strong> oh<\/em> \u201cCrazy\u201d in \u201cThe Feeling\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n If I am delusional then maybe I’m crazy<\/strong><\/em> \u201cSecret\u201d (first syllable is open) in \u201cHeartbreaker\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n Oh girl I got a secret<\/strong> place that we can go<\/em> \u201cEven\u201d in \u201cGirls Like You\u201d by Maroon 5<\/a><\/p>\n I need more hours with you<\/em> \u201cOpen\u201d (first syllable is open) in \u201cWhy Does My Heart Feel So Bad?\u201d by Moby<\/a>\u00a0(at around 1:38)<\/p>\n He’ll open<\/strong> doors<\/em> \u201cFuture\u201d in \u201cGod Save the Queen\u201d by The Sex Pistols<\/a><\/p>\n When there’s no future<\/strong><\/em> \u201cSilent\u201d (initial syllable is open) in \u201cZero Friction\u201d by The Presidents of the United States of America<\/a><\/p>\n In fairness, this is more pop punk than punk, but you gotta love The Presidents.<\/p>\n Silent<\/strong> punk rocker<\/em> \u201cEvil\u201d in Evil Woman by Electric Light Orchestra<\/a><\/p>\n Ha, ha, woman, it’s a cryin’ shame<\/em> Evil<\/strong> woman<\/em> \u201cLady\u201d in \u201cWho\u2019s That Lady?\u201d by The Isley Brothers<\/a><\/p>\n Beautiful lady<\/strong> (who’s that lady<\/strong>)<\/em> So there you have it.\u00a0 Some great examples of open syllable words\u2014BA\u00b7<\/b>BY<\/strong>, CRA<\/strong>\u00b7<\/b>ZY<\/strong>, SE\u00b7<\/b><\/strong>cret, E\u00b7<\/b><\/strong>ven, O\u00b7<\/b><\/strong>pen, FU\u00b7<\/b><\/strong>ture, SI\u00b7<\/b><\/strong>lent, E\u00b7<\/b><\/strong>vil and LA<\/strong>\u00b7<\/b>DY<\/strong>\u2014in great tunes. The bolded syllables in upper case are the open ones: no closing consonant after a single vowel with a resulting long vowel sound.
